In this section, we will discuss current and past policy surrounding the welfare of Indigenous children, children with disabilities, 2SLGBTQ+ children, and the standards and regulations for international adoption. Indigenous, Disabled, and 2SLGBTQ+ children continue to be overrepresented in foster care, a result of systemic inequalities, prejudice, and the long-term effects of colonialism. Additionally, international adoption is a complex process that requires careful attention to legal, cultural, and citizenship issues. Ideally, the process ensures that all children, regardless of their country of origin, receive the support, care, and legal status they need to thrive in Canada. Both the child welfare system and the international adoption process require policies and practices that are inclusive, culturally sensitive, and supportive of the diverse needs of children from different backgrounds.
