This diagram illustrates how plastic waste is being addressed at the Federal Level. It starts from policies and legislations and from there it is able to influence the lives of Canadians. The part in grey highlights how Federal Plastics Policy influences other areas of the government and Canadian politics which are covered in the other sections of our website.
All enforcement and regulatory powers are granted from the federal government through various policies. Canada has over 10 federal acts, regulations and agreements that prevent plastic waste however not all are used in current enforcement and deliberations. The majority of legislative action, and prioritization of plastic waste reduction has occurred post 2018 which is why current deliberation surrounding these efforts are crucial. Plastic waste policy is being developed and amended through various committees and house debates. Within the Discussion section you will find that these deliberations provide key insight to how the Federal government is enforcing plastic waste reduction efforts, what they are prioritizing, and how their actions align with their current commitments and goals.

Following the October 2020 announcement of Canada committing to zero plastic waste by 2030; Environment and Climate Change Canada created a list highlighting previous plastic waste reduction efforts and facts.
