Canada's mining sector is a vital contributor to the economy, contributing approximately $109 billion annually. In 2021, the mining sector contributed significantly to Canada's economy, generating approximately $97 billion in GDP and supporting around 665,000 jobs. Additionally, mineral exports were valued at $126.6 billion. (Standing Committee on International Trade, 2023 ). Public policy plays an essential role in regulating mining activity. Such as the various provincial Mining Acts, which govern the mining industry and ensure responsible resource extraction within a specific province. Industry organizations like the Mining Association of Canada, work with government organizations to promote the interests of the mining industry.

Non-Government organizations (NGOs) such as MiningWatch Canada work play a crucial role in advocating for responsible and sustainable mining practices. They act was a watchdog monitoring the industry's activities and holding companies accountable for their environmental and social impacts. Pollution from mining sites is a major concern for policymakers, regulators, and communities alike. The pollution of waterways, airways, and soil from mining sites affects poses a significant threat to the nearby communicates, Indigenous nations, and destroys the ecosystem. Indigenous NGOs like the British Columbia First Nation Energy and Mining Council, work to support mining activity in Canada. Together, Industry organizations, NGOs, government policy work to further responsible mining that protects the environment and respects Indigenous rights and traditions attached to the land.
