According to the Government of Canada, it is estimated that approximately one in five Canadians aged 15 and older develop a dependency on substances in their lifetime. With flourishing illicit drug markets and unfaltering stigmatization surrounding substance users, the site will cover the prevalence of the opioid crisis found in Canada and determine how the Federal, Provincial, and key interest groups are intending to combat the rising death due to illicit drug toxicity, the provided amount of government-expenditure towards safe harm reduction treatments and policies to ensure a safer, reliable-regulated drug supply in Canada.
“During the first year of the pandemic, there was a 95% increase in apparent opioid toxicity deaths (April 2020 – March 2021, 7,224 deaths), compared to the year before (April 2019 – March 2020, 3,711 deaths). Since then, deaths have remained high.”

We are a group of political science students based at the University of British Columbia dedicated to educating the public about Canada’s history and current public policies surrounding substance dependency. Our goal is to create a safer and healthier Canada, and we aim to do so, by identifying solutions to help victims of substance dependency and combat the stigma that is associated with addictions.
